Going back to the front of the watch, it is easy to miss little details. Take the hands for example which are fashioned from single blocks of gold, and machined until the highly polished, faceted hands are perfect. The miniature detail is so impressive. The tourbillon care has a small plaque with what I believe is the watch's serial number. Each is individually numbered, and you know exactly how many of them came before yours; a number that is likely not to be very high.
Like many new avant garde luxury watch, the Sequential One attempts to stand out by presenting the display of time in a novel manner. In a way that is thematically similar to Urwerk watches, the Sequential watch relies on four aperture windows with revolving triangular panes (you can call them "prism shaped"), thus providing a total of 12 displays. The hours are displayed digitally on these aperture windows, while minutes are displayed in a retrograde fashion on a disc that shifts to feature one of the hour displays. In addition to the similarity that the Sequential One has to Urwerk watches, it is easy to see the Harry Winston Opus line influence, which makes sense given the fact that Giguet operated this division at Harry Winston. The video below shows the watch in action, it is actually quite impressive.
This here is a really cool watch that blends watch making prowess, a jeweler's practicality, and manly looks. Ulysse Nardin never likes 'just' releasing luxury watches. There always needs to be some special twist that makes them special. Your first hint at this fact is in the name of this watch; "Macho." Looking at it, you sort of have to agree. The oval face and aggressive hands are rather macho. There is something defiant in the look of this watch, although you can't seem to place your finger on it. What you are looking at is inflated proportions that create a fantasy like watch that is finely detailed and perfectly practical.

I must admit that once in a while I'd like for someone to recognize the watch I am wearing. It is not that I place much value on the opinions of others regarding my tastes, but rather that I'd like some recognition once in a while for the hobby that I place so much effort in to. The best way of achieving this is often the simplest approach; wearing well known names. Tiffany & Co. just happens to be one of those names.

This will not be the first time that a watch face was designed after an automobile instrument panel, but this time there is no hiding the fact. In an obvious wave to the cultural icon that Volkswagen cars have been for so many over the years, Bavarian Crono ("Chrono" for us English minded folks) offers a line of watches that have very faithfully mimicked the look and feel of selected classic VW instrument panels. Currently there are 10 watches in the collection, but I suspect more will be added if this collection grows more popular (Bavarian Crono already has a few Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar themed watches).
Why don't they sell? Again, two reasons. Because there is perhaps not enough demand, and second, because the buyer has no idea what the reserve price is. Most important bidding occurs in the final minutes of an auction. A time when buyers decide how much the item is worth it to them, and bid accordingly hoping they don't get out-bid. The system rewards quick decision making, and it is only the rare bidder will bids so high as to alienate other bidders. The idea is to pay enough, but not too much. Thus auctions with a reserve price don't sell, because no one ever reaches the reserve price in the final moments of an auction. See the above image as an example. Here an auction ended without the reserve price being met. You can see that the auction enjoyed 8 bids, likely more if the auction reserve would have been met. There is obvious interest in this item, but the reserve price was not met, the item did not sell, and you have a frustrated seller, and frustrated buyers.

I'm not going to get all mushy or dramatic. It has been a year since I started aBlogtoRead.com and it has really come a long way. When the site began, I had little idea that it would be solely a blog about watches. Could I really handle writing about watches all the time? Well the answer to that question is pretty self evident. At first, I really thought that watches would merely be a regular, albeit shared category, along with other things that I know about. While I do occasionally remark on legal or business items, and Internet marketing, my passion has obviously laid with those little time telling machines that I wish were more ubiquitous.
Actually, Romain Jerome is doing quite well despite the economy, and I don't think it is because they are cooking the books. They know how to source good watches and put together interesting ideas. Successful high-end watch making is all about creating something that people want. The skill takes marketing savvy and product know-how. The 2008 sales income for Romain Jerome was 25 million Swiss Franks. That is three times higher than forecasts, and six times higher than 2007. At least 20% of the income is pure profit after expenses for the company. The challenge now for Yvan Arpa is sustain the growth, fulfilling the many watch orders, and keeping up with the demand for service and style from Romain Jerome.
The Bell & Ross BRS line was discussed a while ago upon its initial debut. These are around the corner from being released and are a beautiful line of full ceramic watches from Bell & Ross. Styling is based on the ultra popular Bell & Ross BR-01 series, but represents a smaller (39mm versus 46mm) and thinner case. Both the white and black versions are stunning, and come with or without diamonds. The 39mm case is the perfect size to be considered "unisex," as I can honestly see these watches being appropriate on both men and women (unlike the larger BR-01) watches. To keep the watch as thin as possible, Bell & Ross curiously chose a manually wound mechanical movement. These are certain to become "the haute" Bell & Ross in the fall when they are released. Expect retail prices to start in the ,000 range for Bell & Ross BRS ceramic watches without diamonds.

For LUM-TEC it is a great opportunity to design something for which there is already a market. The company can be sure that a hefty percentage of the design participants will actually buy the resulting watch. Why wouldn't you? Especially after putting in months of time and feedback on what the watch will look like. Further, LUM-TEC will hold drawing for a free watch to those who participated in the process. Fans may also have the option of buying the watches in bulk together, in order get a lower price all around. Based on current LUM-TEC watch prices, the new fan designed watch will likely be between 0 - 0.
