When it comes to quartz-driven watches that maintain accuracy via some sort of outside reference input, you have traditionally been limited to watches that receive atomic timekeeping signals from observatories around the world. That changed in 2012, with Seiko hooking their watches up to GPS satellites. Two years down the road, we now have a new limited edition Seiko Astron GPS Solar Chronograph in a "his and her's" design configuration.
At first glance, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948 evoked a bit of the “same but different” vibe you’d expect from a watch with the same case dimensions and movement you’ve seen and handled so many times before. But after spending some time with it, the 1948 turns out to have a distinct flavor all its own.
Richard Mille, being who they are, though, are not about to leave things just with a trick like that (impressive as it is). The movement that makes all of this possible is made from grade-5 titanium, with a variety of finishes. You can see part of the movement via the exhibition case back, but this is actually rather uninspired – and arguably not as fancy and colorful as one would expect on a women's watch – especially when compared to the show you have on the dial side.
The Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver has a sapphire crystal which appears to have AR coating on both sides. The crystal has a noticeable dome to it, and is raised above the edges of the case (possibly to allow fitment of the internal bezel). Despite the dome, it offers great legibility from any angle.
ABTW: What is the mix between your local versus online business, who do you find you service most?
Shreve, Crump & Low: Boston is a more conservative market than most. All of our brands at SCL were carefully selected based on their exclusivity, history, prestige, such as: A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Omega and IWC.
Pushers on the side of the case are used to adjust the second and third time zone indicator faces on the dial. The good news is that the Bovet Recital 16 case doesn't have a lot of extra crowns on it, but the bad news is that you'll need a small tool to adjust the watch as your naked fingers will not be able to do it. Bovet isn't the only brand to do that, and I wonder how owners feel when it comes time to adjust their watches. Actually, to be fair, most watch makers supply little pusher tools to adjust the watch which will not scratch the case. Then again, how many owners carry these small tools around with them? I've always thought it would be good to have a small tool in the strap buckle if a watch relies upon inset pushers to make adjustments to the movement.
Overlooking Los Angeles at the historic Chateau Marmont Hotel, guests celebrated The World's Most Expensive Watches book launch in an event that I was honored to host in collaboration with party sponsor Hublot watches. I'd like to reiterate my words from the event, and say thank you to the many wonderful people who not only attended the launch, but who helped make the event a success.
Olivier Audemars: Well, the bloggers are people that allow us to reach a segment of the population who are less affected by regular, traditional, media. This allows a deep dialog. And what we have observed more and more, is that many in the new generation believe less in what they read in the press or what they see on TV or other traditional media. What they believe in most is the opinions of their peers.
While the market for smartwatches has been steadily growing in recent years, bringing a tirelessly increasing demand for these devices, without a doubt, it was the official announcement of the Apple Watch that stirred the waters up and introduced the idea of the smartwatch to the greater masses. In our feature article, we discussed the possible effects this new release may have on the traditional watch industry. With over 260 comments and counting, this clearly is a hot topic with many concerned watch enthusiasts voicing their opinion and ideas about what is to be expected in the very near future as far as the fate of traditional watchmaking is concerned.

What is really to blame for the almost total lack of accountability when it comes to when smartwatches (or other new technology, for that matter) come to market is the popularity of the crowd-funding-style business plan. Entrepreneurs of all types flock to mostly Kickstarter and Indiegogo to ask people to "back" their yet-to-be-released products in exchange for special pricing and offers. It presents consumers an ability to vote with their wallets on items and ideas that might not ever come to fruition otherwise, and it presents a much lower-risk financial environment for project starters.
Stuff like this is rather easy to make fun of, but you know it is going to happen. Yvan Arpa is just being entrepreneurial about an expectant surge in smartwatch popularity, and what could possibly be Apple Watch dominance of the segment for at least a good while. Further, he is sending a message to his high-end clients that, "don't worry, we can still do business together, even if you'll want to wear an Apple Watch." If customers used to wearing lavish mechanical watches worry about losing their "exclusive edge" by choosing a mass produced Apple Watch, then perhaps there is a market for after-market Apple Watch customization. It seems entirely plausible, if not inevitable.
I have a feeling that the date display is going to be one of those elements that will divide some folks. For those who just like that it is easier read, it is a welcome addition. Others, however, may take issue with it "cutting into" the register, and the fact that it is inverted to the colors of the dial. I personally do not have an issue with this particular dial cutout. And yes, I would have liked to see white-on-black for those date wheels, but the black-on-white they have gone with works pretty well with the dial as a whole.

The Casio MR-G MRG-G1000 watch is about 49.8mm wide (though it wears smaller), which is significantly smaller than the larger GPW1000 watch that is about 55mm wide. It is also about 16.9mm thick, which while large, is a reasonable size for a Casio G-Shock. It wears nicely and comfortably thanks to its light weight and awesome pivoting lugs (though not quite as fancy as the ones on the MT-G though). Lug to lug length of the watch is about 54.7mm and the weight of the MR-G is 153 grams, which isn't bad at all for the size (and is thanks to the titanium construction).
One of the features I really miss from the Eterna KonTiki Diver that is missing in the Porsche Design P'6780 Diver is a power reserve indicator on the dial. I not only happen to be fond of automatic watches with power reserve indicators, but also love them on diver watches. Since you are going full on with the diving fantasy when you wear a watch like this, it is worth considering that underwater, you need your watch to operate and can't really afford to let it run out. Also, it isn't going to automatically wind as much there as it would while you are on land given fewer and slower arm movements.
24k gold works for this exclusive Percheron model because of a unique forging process that, simply put, makes it hard enough to be produced as a watch case without concerns about metal softness. It is weighty like gold and there is a pure decadence to the 24k nature of the case that makes it all that much more interesting than 18k gold cases. Let's just say that it makes for a good conversation piece, as well as an ultimate status item for gold-lovers. And those people certainly exist. For some people, of course, it is going to be totally silly, since they aren't into gold in the first place.

Building a smartly designed ultra-slim watch that checks all of the boxes is a tall order for most manufactures. I do have a singular gripe, and that is that I would loved to have seen the blued steel hands used on other models in the Heritage collection make an appearance on the steel model Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Ultra Slim – but that’s just personal aesthetic preference speaking. Beyond that, this piece is in my opinion damn near perfect.
